Racquet Stringing Tips
Tips for Maximum Racquet Performance
-
Here are a few tips on caring for your racquet and strings to keep you performing at the top of your game. Restring your racquet as many times per year as you play per week (with a minimum of 2 times per year). This will ensure a minimum standard of string performance. Typically, nylon strings "bag out" and lose most of their life after 30-40 playing hours (if they don't break first). This is a gradual process, so many players don't notice until they have their racquet restrung.
-
Keep your racquet away from heat. This means don't store your racquet in the car trunk during summer. When flying during summer months, carry your racquets on board instead of checking them with other luggage. Tension loss and loss of string life are dramatically accelerated at temperatures above 100 degrees (F).
-
If you carry more than one racquet on court, keep your spare racquet(s) out of the sun. UV rays deteriorate string performance so keep them covered or (better yet) in the shade. Also, be sure to rotate your racquets regularly for even wear and tear of frame and strings.

You can select the tension which best suits your game by determining what type of player you are, whether you are a hard hitter who likes to smash or a person who likes net play and accurate shots, basically it's a choice between power or control or a balance of the two. Many believe that the higher the tension the more power you get, this is true to a certain extent, however beyond a certain point the power will start to decrease. I get a lot a customers who say "I want it as tight as possible.." I then watch them use the racket and struggle to get any power out of it. The principle is the same as we mentioned before, lower tensions, means more "elasticity", which therefore means more power and less control. Higher tensions above the "optimum power point" will give you less power, but what you lose in power you gain in control. for most rackets the manufacturer suggest tensions between 16 and 20 lbs, most good players with a lot of power will have the tension a lot higher, around about 25 lbs.
